Test Pilot Program

Test Pilots

Disability Advocates works collaboratively with individuals with disabilities and truly values their first-hand perspectives and expertise to make the most impact toward advancing best practices in inclusion and accessibility.

Our Test Pilots are people with disabilities who volunteer to assist with our important accessibility work. Test Pilots can be seen rolling and strolling through the streets of downtown Grand Rapids, for instance, as part of our partnerships with Downtown Grand Rapids Inc., Experience Grand Rapids, and the City of Grand Rapids, helping to improve the accessibility of local businesses as well as city infrastructure and even community events. The Test Pilots provide feedback on what works and what needs improvement toward building a more accessible and inclusive world for us all. They are our work’s “secret sauce” and have a tremendous impact.

Client Testimonial

“Policymakers and steering committee members always cite their interaction with a Test Pilot as one of their most memorable experiences when we do a community planning process. Most people never consider the challenges our built environment presents to someone with a disability. As simple as it may seem to share a window into your life, showing up increases awareness and truly does affect decision-making.”
