Independent Living Solutions Occupational Therapy

Disability Advocates offers a thorough assessment of the person, home, and environment to identify barriers to independent living.  An Occupational Therapist will assess the situation, set up and implement a plan to make the home environment accessible through modifications and/or equipment.  Our program goal is to keep people safe and independent in their home environment. Disability Advocates serves consumers in Kent, Ionia, Montcalm, Mecosta, and Osceola counties.

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, Independent Living Solutions might be able to help!

Our Independent Living Solution Occupational Therapy program offers:

  • Home Assessments by a Registered Occupational Therapist
  • Access to our Medical Equipment Loan Closet
  • Connections to Local Resources
  • Home Modifications Recommendations for bathrooms, kitchens, and wheelchair ramps
  • Funding for services include the following:  Kent County Senior Millage, Community Development Block Grant, Disabled American Veterans, and Thome Foundation

Home Assessment

Home Assessment:

  • Occupational Therapy assessment of the person, daily activities, and home
  • Recommendations for safety, independence, and accessibility
  • Plan detailing need for equipment and/or modifications
  • Occupational Therapy Assistant follow ups and equipment training
  • Grants, insurance, sliding-scale private pay, funding for services. Grant funding includes: Kent County Millage, Community Development Block Grant, Disabled American Veterans, Thome Foundation, and others.

Accessibility Consultation for New Construction or Remodeling:

  • Home Plan review to ensure accessibility
  • Assistance in designing your custom accessible home
  • Resources/information for accessibility, equipment, funding, and knowledgeable builders
  • 4 Certified Aging in Place specialists on staff

Hearing Aid

Hearing Aid Services

  • Do you have difficulty hearing while on the phone?
  • Is the volume on your TV turned all the way up?
  • Do you ask people to repeat themselves in conversation?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, the Disability Advocates Hearing Aid Services & Adaptive Equipment for Hearing Loss program may be able to assist you.  This program serves those who are hard of hearing and/or experiencing difficulty hearing in later years. Disability Advocates is able to provide this program with funding through the Kent County Senior Millage. 

Services May include

  • Hearing Exams and Hearing Aids
  • A home assessment to identify appropriate adaptive equipment which many improve hearing and enhance the activities of daily living.

Eligibility Requirements:

Kent County Senior Millage services are designed to help older adults stay in their own homes.  Persons must be at least 60 years old and a resident of Kent County. There are income requirements, and a small co-payment may be requirement
