Building Opportunities, Creating Independence. A Capital Campaign for Disability Advocates
Empower a veteran to remain in their home.
Disability Advocates of Kent County launched our Veteran Support Services campaign to support low-income veterans with service-connected disabilities achieve independence and safety in their own home. We aim to empower veterans with our impactful home accessibility services.Â
Over 7% of Michigan’s adult population are veterans, and there are over 28,000 veterans living in Kent County alone. In Michigan, 18.7% of veterans live with a service-connected disability. One in every four Michigan veterans with service-connected live below ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) threshold. This population is also more likely than the general population to experience housing insecurity, mental and physical health challenges, and social isolation.
Housing is a critical factor to creating stability in one’s life. Unfortunately, many Michigan veterans find themselves ineligible for programs offering housing assistance because they are below the age of 60 or their income is slightly higher than requirements. These veterans must either pay for expensive housing interventions out of pocket or remain in an unsafe, inaccessible home environment.
Disability Advocates’ Occupational Therapy (OT) team empowers people with disabilities to remain in their home. They offer home modifications and accessibility reviews as well as adaptive equipment.
In 2022, the (OT) team provided housing accessibility services to 89 veterans. Disability Advocates seeks to raise X to add Y number of new veterans by DATE. To accomplish this goal, we are seeking X number of donors to contribute (Y or more).
If you would be interested in supporting this cause, do not hesitate to contact the Resource Development team via email or call 616-323-2208.
